What is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)?
It’s a personality inventory developed over 40 years by
Katherine Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Myers. It’s based on the
theories of Carl Jung that human behavior is not random, but
patterned,orderly and consistent.
It’s the most widely used personality inventory worldwide and is
available in sixteen languages and taken by over 2 million people
annually.
What you’ll find out when you take the MBTI
-how you prefer to get energy -internally or by interacting with
the outside world;
-how you prefer to perceive details or the big picture;
-how you prefer to make decisions – by using reason and logic or
values and the impact on people; and
-how you prefer to be orderly and planful or spontaneous and emerging.
Our preferences are similar to the way in which we “prefer” to use either
our right hand or the left hand for writing our name. Some people are more adept in writing with either hand, although all of us can do it. Most of us, however, have a distinct preference for using one hand over the other.
When we write with our preferred hand, it’s easier, more natural and
takes less effort. If we write with the opposite hand it’s unnatural,
requires thought and effort and is awkward.
So, if we are aware of our natural preferences, we can make choices on how we can create work and life that allows us to operate more naturally.
What the Myers-Briggs is NOT:
- a horoscope – it does not predict behavior
- does not put us in boxes
How to take the MBTI
- It takes about 20 minutes to take. I use a confidential, online site.
The results come only to me, as the facilitator
- You and your team will take the MBTI a week or so before we meet.
- You answer the questions based on how you are in your most relaxed state. I think of it as being at home in your favorite chair with your feet up.
- When you sign up to participate in a team workshop or an individual session, I’ll send you the website address for you to sign in to my confidential site.
- There are no “right” answers, only what’s right for you.
The MBTI® Team Development Workshop Phase 1
An easy, insightful way to understand yourself and your team.
Locations: Portland, Seattle, Denver, Chicago and more
Do you need your team to work together, communicate and make decisions more effectively?
The MBTI® is probably the most insightful and useful instrument available to very quickly understand how and why people tend to behave and contribute in work situations the way they do.
Why is that important?
Work is stressful enough as it is. You want your team to work like
a well-oiled machine, not like a rusty, out of adjustment clunker. When teams work well together they get things done, especially the most complex jobs.
- The MBTI Team Workshop is for all levels and types of
employees –executives, managers, individual contributors.
- The workshop is tailored to your needs. I have a variety of
exercises and the ones that address exactly what you want to
accomplish are chosen. For example: stress, problem-solving, communicating with customers, getting to know team members and their strengths, decision-making and more.
- The workshop is fun. You learn while doing exercises that
generally result in a lot of laughter and “aha’s”.
- In the workshop we discuss what you want to do differently,
as a result of what was learned. Typically, teams choose 3-5 things
that will make a big difference in how the team works together.
A “Next Steps” sheet will be created for you to use.
- The workshop can be done in a conference room at your location
or in a hotel conference room.
- The workshop logistics (lunch, room etc.) are generally arranged
by someone on your team. Those costs are paid directly by you.
- Each participant receives an individualized report that includes:
“I was very skeptical about this workshop. It was mandatory that
we show up on a Saturday morning. By 10 a.m. we’d done an exercise
that got us talking about our most important issues and
I had high hopes for the rest of the day. The results were amazing!” EP, client

what was learned? I know I sure have. That’s why the Phase 2 is
offered to ensure that the leaders are fully prepared to apply the
skills to their business needs and the team.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ’s
If I did the MBTI a long time ago, will it change?
The MBTI is a highly validated instrument, which means
that the results tend to stay the same every time you take it.
When individuals are under stress, experiencing a lot of upheaval
in their life (e.g. mid-life change, divorce, career change, death
of loved one) or developing new parts of themselves (e.g. becoming
more comfortable being alone and quiet) sometimes
the results are different.
